SPRINT DISTANCE - NELSON EAST - NMIT
Friday 25 March 2016

A new sprint map produced by Bryan Teahan covering an area to the east of the Nelson CBD.  The challenge will come from a variety of urban environments with densely packed buildings to detailed landscaped parks.  Areas include:
  • Queens Gardens - an area of formal gardens and a large pond
  • Albion Square - includes the Nelson Court and the Suter Gallery
  • NMIT Campus - city campus of local polytech
  • St Josephs and Nelson Central schools
  • Nelson College for Girls campus
  • Trafalgar Park - grounds of Nelson's iconic cathedral
Planner: Brent Edwards (NOC)
Controller: Wayne Gray (NOC)
Organiser: Lucy Thomsen (NOC)
Comment from Bryan after a mapping mission - 31 March 2015:

"I was mapping Albion Square and around the Police buildings and eventually a police car came up and asked me what I was doing. I said my name, and I was mapping for the New Zealand Orienteering Champs 2016 and I showed them my mapboard and said they could contact the club if they wanted. I said I was also mapping many out-of-bounds areas. I must have looked suspicious like the guy who was living in a tent (with all his gear) under the trees in the square. The Policeman said it was a lovely day, then went off on his business for the day."
